Water-smart gardens: what should stay waterproof, on purpose

Permeability is having a moment in garden design. Across Europe, gardens are getting more porous: gravel courts, planted joints, on-site infiltration, fewer sealed concrete slabs. It's a sensible response to heavier rain and drier summers.

But one part gets lost in the "let water through everywhere" story. A good garden also needs elements that hold water on purpose. A fountain is only a fountain while it actually holds water. A raised bed only earns its place if it keeps the roots moist through a dry August. And an artificial rock only does its job if it keeps rain and frost off the socket or pump hidden inside it. Water in a garden does two jobs: it passes through, and it stays put. Good design decides where each one happens.

Letting rain soak into the ground instead of running off is mostly the landscaper's job. The part people forget is the opposite one: the few elements meant to hold water, or keep it out, that get used every day and can't afford to fail.

Where "waterproof on purpose" matters most

• Fountains and water bowls: their whole function is holding water reliably, season after season, through freeze-thaw cycles. The surface has to stay watertight and frost-resistant, or the feature simply stops working.
• Raised beds: the walls hold moisture around the roots so the bed doesn't dry out the moment the weather turns, with controlled drainage designed into the base.
• Artificial stone covers: this is where artificial stone beats the real thing. A cast cover looks just like natural rock, but it's hollow, watertight and frost-resistant, so it can hide what a garden needs but nobody wants to see: a socket, a pump, a valve, a well head or an access point to the electrics. It keeps rain and moisture off whatever sits underneath, which a solid natural boulder simply can't do.

A quick checklist when planning

1. For the permeable zones, build the base for real infiltration, not just a permeable top layer.
2. For anything that must hold water or stay dry, choose pieces built watertight and frost-resistant, not decorative lookalikes.
3. Don't ask a decorative surface to do a structural job, or the other way around.
